Preliminary and Secondary Vocational Education

Preliminary and secondary vocational education is one of the components of the educational system of the Republic of Armenia. This system includes preliminary vocational and secondary vocational educational institutions (colleges, vocational schools) that provide professional education to individuals with basic or secondary education.

Types and Levels of Education

Preliminary and secondary vocational education is divided into two main levels. Preliminary vocational education is aimed at developing craft and trade skills, while secondary vocational education focuses on building deeper professional knowledge and competencies.

Preliminary and secondary vocational education is an educational system designed for individuals who wish to acquire professional knowledge and skills while completing their basic education (e.g., secondary school). It focuses on teaching occupations that require practical skills and applied abilities in specific fields, without the need for higher education.

This type of education includes both theoretical classes and practical training, helping students obtain professional qualifications.

Preliminary vocational education usually lasts from 6 months to 1 year. The duration may vary depending on the educational institution.

Secondary vocational education typically lasts from 2 to 5 years, depending on the program and the student's prior educational background.

Upon completion of the preliminary vocational education graduates are awarded the qualification of “Craftsman.”

Upon completion of the secondary vocational education graduates are awarded the qualification of “Specialist.”

Admissions Procedure and Conditions

Educational institutions follow a clearly defined admission procedure, which includes the list of required documents, application deadlines, and admission conditions. Each institution may also have additional specific requirements.

Documents required for admission are:

Passport, identification card or birth certificate
Public services number (social card)
Education certificate/diploma (basic or secondary)
Military ID book
Photograph

The admission process includes:

Acceptance of documents,
Competitive selection based on the average grade of the diploma,
Entrance exams for certain specialties,
Signing the contract,
Issuance of an enrollment order.

Yes, a fee of 1,000 AMD is set for submitting an online application to preliminary and secondary vocational education institutions.

The educational institution approves or rejects the application within 3 working days after submission, indicating the reason, which the applicant can view in their personal account.

If an entrance exam is required for the selected specialty, the date and time of the exam, provided by the institution, will also be displayed in the applicant’s personal account.

The application must be submitted:

For non-sectoral specialties: by August 15, 6:00 PM (inclusive),
For sectoral specialties: by August 3, 6:00 PM (inclusive).

The exams are held:

From August 5 to 15,
For distance learning programs: until November 25, 6:00 PM (inclusive).

Learning Process

The learning process is organized in accordance with state educational standards. It includes both theoretical and practical sessions, as well as industrial internships aimed at gaining work experience.

Laboratory work
Practical training
Industrial internship
Course projects
Final examinations

Education and Enrollment Order

An applicant who successfully passes the competition becomes a student after the completion of their personal file and issuance of the official order by the director. The student signs an academic contract that specifies the field of study, form of education, duration, and tuition fee — which cannot be changed during the course of study. After enrollment, the student receives a copy of the contract, a student ID card, and an academic record book.

When the applicant passes the competition and their personal file is fully completed, the director of the educational institution issues an enrollment order within 2 working days. The lists are published the following day.

The educational institution is obligated to familiarize the applicant and their legal representative with the institution’s license, charter, internal regulations, and details of the educational program.

The contract specifies the chosen specialty, the form of study, the duration of the program, and the total tuition fee, broken down by academic years. It is important to note that the established tuition fee cannot be changed during the course of study.

The student receives their copy of the contract, a student ID card, and an academic record book.

For in-person learning, up to 25 students; for distance learning, up to 20 students.

Original documents are returned to the applicant. Copies and exam papers are kept at the institution for 6 months, after which they are destroyed in accordance with the procedure established by law.

Support Programs

The financial support system allows students to receive state student benefits, scholarships, tuition fee discounts, and loans. Special attention is given to socially vulnerable groups as well as students with high academic achievement.
