How to Become a Citizen of the Republic of Armenia?

  1. Step 1

    Prepare Your Documents

    Depending on the legal basis for obtaining citizenship, you must prepare the corresponding required documents as outlined in the guide.

  2. Step 2

    Submit a preliminary application

    To become a citizen of Armenia, you can fill out a preliminary application through the Electronic Citizenship Case Management System.

  3. Step 3

    Submit Your Original Documents

    If your preliminary application is approved, you must select a date and time for your visit to present the original documents to the Citizenship Department (Address: 17/10, 4th District, Davtashen). If you are abroad, you must present them to the RA Embassy or Consular Office in your country of residence.

  4. Step 4

    Receive your passport

    Within 90 days of submitting your original documents, you will be notified whether your citizenship application has been approved or denied. If your application is approved, you can then apply to receive your passport.

Grounds for Obtaining Citizenship

You can acquire Armenian citizenship if:

  • You are of Armenian ethnicity,
  • yhave resided in Armenia for the last 3 years in accordance with the law,
  • you have been married for the last 2 years, and during that period, you have resided in Armenia on legal grounds for at least 365 days,
  • you have a parent or child who is an Armenian citizen,
  • you previously held Armenian citizenship,
  • you hold refugee status,
  • you are a stateless person,
  • your parents (or one of them) previously held Armenian citizenship.

The documents required for a citizenship application vary depending on the legal basis you select.

Attention
For all foreign-language documents, it is necessary to attach their Armenian translation, which must be certified by Apostille or consular legalization.

Test on Knowledge of the Constitution and Armenian Language

Applicants who are not of Armenian ethnicity must take a test on the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia and knowledge of the Armenian language on-site after their original documents have been verified.

Obtaining a Passport

After acquiring RA citizenship through any of the specified grounds, it is necessary to apply for a passport. The passport allows you to leave and return to the Republic of Armenia; it is also used within the territory of the RA as a document confirming your identity.
