Administrative Offenses
How to Drive in Armenia?
This guide provides the necessary information on traffic rules in the Republic of Armenia, including applicable administrative fines for violations, potential discounts, and helpful mobile applications.
Driving rules, fines and penalty points system in Armenia
When driving a car in Armenia, it is essential to follow specific rules to ensure road safety and avoid fines.
While driving, it is specifically prohibited to:
-
smoke,
-
talk on the phone (only hands-free calls are allowed),
-
sit in the front seat without wearing a seatbelt,
-
allow children under 12 years old to sit in the front seat.
The permitted speed limits are:
-
within cities and residential areas: 20 km/h to 60 km/h,
-
outside cities: 90 km/h to 110 km/h.
It is prohibited to use a vehicle, if passenger cars and trucks with a maximum allowable mass of up to 3․5 tons are not equipped with winter tires between November 15 and March 31.
Violations of these and other traffic rules result in administrative fines, the amount and type of which vary depending on the nature of the offense. The Republic of Armenia also employs a penalty point system for traffic violations.
Attention
Starting May 1, 2025, changes will be applied to the penalty point system: instead of 9 points per year, drivers will receive 13 points.
On May 1, all drivers will have 13 points, even if they:
- have not used up their previous 9 points,
- have used up some of their points.
If a driver's license has been suspended, on the following day of the suspension drivers will receive 13 points.
If you use up all 9 points within the current year, you will be disqualified from driving for 6 months, after which you will be given 9 points again.
In this case, you can get your driver's license earlier than the specified period. To do so, you must pass the theoretical qualification exam no sooner than three months after your license was revoked.
If you use up 9 points for the second time in the same year, you will be deprived of your driver's license for 1 year, after which you will have to pass qualification theoretical and practical exams and get a driver's license again.
If you have a few points left in your balance, you can replenish them once a year by passing a theoretical exam and receiving 2 "bonus" points.
If you are the car's owner, but someone else was driving your car when the violation occurred, the points for the violation will be deducted from your record, not the driver's, since you own the car.
To avoid such a problem, you simply need to add the driver to the car in the roadpolice.am online system, and the points will be deducted from the given driver.
