Change First Name, Surname, or Patronymic

Any person who has reached the age of 18 has the right to change their first name, surname, or patronymic without a court decision.

Upon the state registration of a name change, a name change certificate is issued. If necessary, it is also possible to obtain a duplicate of the certificate online (including duplicates of paper certificates issued prior to 2021).

How to Apply

To submit a name change application, you must first book an appointment and visit any Civil Status Acts Registration office (CSAR) under the RA Ministry of Justice to present the required documents.

 

Requirements

A state registration application for a name change may be submitted if:

  • The birth was registered or restored by Armenian CSAR bodies or RA consular offices.
  • The birth was registered by a foreign state, and Armenia is authorized to perform the name change based on a bilateral or multilateral international treaty.

 

Required Documents

For individuals aged 18 and over the following must be attached to the application:

  • the applicant's identification document,
  • a birth certificate or data regarding the birth registration record.

The application must include the following information:

  • the applicant's passport details,
  • the current name, patronymic, surname, place and date of birth, citizenship, residence, marital status, and ethnicity (at the applicant's discretion),
  • the name, patronymic, surname, and birth registration details of each of the applicant's minor children,
  • the new name and/or patronymic and/or surname chosen by the applicant.
  • other necessary information.

For individuals aged 16 to 18 the following must be attached to the application:

  • the applicant's identification document,
  • the identification document of the person changing their name,
  • the birth certificate or birth registration data of the person changing their name,
  • the name, patronymic, surname, and birth registration details of each of the minor children of the person changing their name,
  • passport details of the parent(s), adopters, or legal guardian(s),
  • written consent from the parent(s), adopters, or legal guardian(s) regarding the name and/or surname change,
  • identification documents (copies) of the parent(s), adopters, or legal guardian(s). If a parent is deceased, declared missing, or incapacitated by a court, a copy of the death certificate or the legally binding court ruling must be provided.

The application for those aged 16 to 18 must include:

  • the applicant's passport details and the ID of the person changing their name,
  • the current name, patronymic, surname, place and date of birth, citizenship, residence, marital status, and ethnicity (optional) of the person changing their name,
  • the name, patronymic, surname, and birth details of each minor child of the person changing their name,
  • the chosen new name and/or surname.

For children under 16 the following must be attached to the application:

  • the applicant's identification document,
  • the child’s state birth certificate or birth registration data,
  • identification documents (copies) of the parent(s), adopters, or guardians. If a parent is deceased or declared missing/incapacitated by a court, the death certificate or court ruling is required,
  • written consent from the parent(s), adopters, or guardians regarding the name and/or surname change,
  • for children aged 10 and over the child's own consent to the name and/or surname change.

The application for those under 16 must include:

  • the applicant's passport details,
  • the child's current name, patronymic, surname, place and date of birth, citizenship, residence, passport details (if available), and ethnicity (optional),
  • passport details of the parent(s), adopters, or legal guardian(s),
  • the new name and/or surname chosen for the child,
  • other necessary information.

 

Payment Amount and Procedure

The state duty for changing a last name, first name, and patronymic, including the issuance of a certificate, is 50,000 AMD.

 

Delievery Period and Procedure

If the application is submitted through an authorized representative, notarized written consent from the relevant parties regarding the child's name/surname change must also be provided. In this case, the representative's identification document and power of attorney are required.

Attention
  • Name changes within Armenia are registered by the Agency; abroad, they may be registered by diplomatic missions through a formal act of name change registration.
  • State registration of a name change is completed within 15 days of submitting the required documents, except for cases specified by law.
