Learning Armenian is a rewarding experience, particularly if you plan to stay in Armenia for an extended period. It opens new doors and helps you expand your social capital within the country.

Learning Armenian Language

  1. Step 1

    Choose an Armenian Dialect

Eastern and Western Armenian dialects differ in pronunciation and grammar. To avoid confusion, it's recommended to choose one before starting to learn Armenian. Note that in Armenia, Eastern Armenian is the spoken language.

  2. Step 2

    Learn the Armenian Alphabet

The Armenian alphabet has 39 letters and is distinct and unrelated to the Latin alphabet. Dedicate time to memorizing each letter's shape and sound. Pay close attention to pronunciation becuase some Armenian sounds don't exist in English.

  3. Step 3

Exercise Your Armenian by Reading Signs

Start with simple signs: street names, store names, etc. Focus on recognizing the letters and trying to sound out the words. Don't worry about understanding everything at first. The goal is to get comfortable with reading the script.

  4. Step 4

    Learn Basic Armenian Words

Start with common nouns (new words): people, places, things. Listen to Armenian music, podcasts, or radio. Even if you don't understand everything, you'll get used to the sounds and rhythm of the language.

Don't be afraid to try using Armenian on the street, even if you make mistakes. It's the best way to learn.
